When your sales are slow, the phone is quiet and leads have reduced, the urge to say, “Let’s boost something” is very strong. And, it sounds logical. If fewer people are buying, maybe more people just need to see the business.
Sometimes that is true. But sometimes advertising is the last thing you need because ads do not fix a weak offer, confusing message or poor customer experience. They simply put more attention on whatever is already there.
Advertising Is Not a Rescue Button
Many businesses treat advertising like an emergency response. This is how it usually goes;
Sales are down? Run ads.
A new product is struggling? Boost a post.
The month is ending badly? Put some money behind Facebook.
But before spending anything, ask a harder question: If 1,000 new people saw us today, would we actually be ready for them? If the answer is no, advertising may only help you waste money faster.
Start With the Offer
Before promoting anything, make sure people can quickly understand your offer.
What is the offer?
Who is it for?
Why should they care?
How much does it cost?
What should they do next?
If someone sees your advert and still has to struggle to understand the product, the ad has already failed. A weak offer with more reach is still a weak offer.
Where Are You Sending People?
An advert normally sends people somewhere but what happens when they arrive?
Is the website clear? Does the page look trustworthy? Can they easily find the information they need? Does someone respond to WhatsApp enquiries quickly?
If your destination is broken, confusing or slow, buying more traffic will not solve the problem.
Can Your Team Handle the Leads?
This is another part businesses often forget. You run an advert. Ten people enquire but nobody replies until the next day or someone asks for a quotation and waits three days.
The advertising may have worked perfectly but the business simply failed after the lead arrived. Marketing is not finished when somebody clicks. Someone still has to follow up, answer questions and close the sale.
Do People Have a Reason to Trust You?
Before spending money on advertising, look at your business through the eyes of a stranger.
Would you trust it? When people discover you through an advert, many will check you out before buying. If they find very little evidence that your business is credible, you may pay for their attention and still lose them.
Know What You Want the Ad to Do
“Get more business” is not a clear advertising objective.
Do you want: More enquiries? Bookings? Website visits? Product sales? Event registrations? Brand awareness?
Different objectives require different campaigns. If you do not know what success looks like before you advertise, it becomes difficult to know whether the money worked and you may end up celebrating likes while sales remain exactly where they were.
Sometimes the Problem Is Not Visibility
Low sales do not always mean people have not seen you. Maybe the price is wrong, the offer is weak, customers do not understand the value, competitors look more trustworthy or your sales follow-up is poor.
Advertising can bring more people into the picture but it cannot automatically fix these problems. Advertising works best when it is amplifying something that is already ready to sell.
Not when it is being asked to rescue something that is not.
